“Nature is naturally inspiring. It is medicine for the soul. Nature is a part of each of us, whether we embrace it or not. As a wildlife artist, my goal is to touch a part of the soul that only nature can achieve. Something real, something organic and something that touches the heart.”Jerry Ragg

I was born and raised in Minnesota where I was surrounded by nature and the outdoors. Growing up hunting and fishing in the Minnesota wilderness, it was inspiration for me at a young age to paint. I finished my first oil painting at 7 years old. It was a bedded down white-tail buck.

Being a self-taught artist, I remember going to art galleries when I was young and being inspired by wildlife art. During my teenage years, when some of my friends were going down the wrong path, I was painting. When I wasn’t painting, I was in the wilderness. Art saved me from a bad path and kept me on the straight and narrow. I remember feeling more at home in nature, than anywhere else. I’ve said many times in my adult life that “art saved my life”.

When I was 8, I got into my dad’s paints and completed my first mural. Of course, I got in trouble. When my parents noticed that I had a talent, they decided to support me and let me finish painting the mural of my favorite cartoon characters in the basement. In my early adult life I was contemplating a career choice, hopefully in art. Because I’ve always been an aggressive painter and like to paint large images, I found a way to have a career doing what I love – painting.

As a result, Mural Décor was born in 1986. I’ve sustained a 30+ year career as a professional mural artist. This career path has taken me on journeys all over the United States and abroad. I’ve been fortunate to complete projects with large corporations and have been commissioned by private collectors. You can see my online mural portfolio at www.muraldecor.com.

During my career as a mural artist, I never stopped painting wildlife art. I was with a publisher in the early 90’s and released three limited edition prints in the US and Canada. At the time, I had a young family and murals provided a more secure income. So, I decided to dedicate my time to Mural Décor. Although, I kept producing wildlife art paintings.

Murals have influenced my wildlife art and it’s transitioning my fine art into a more dominant and aggressive style. On a lot of my originals, I’m combining my years of experience with large scale murals with my wildlife art. Some of my originals are life size.

In a nutshell, I’ve been painting for over 40 years, professionally for 30. Whether it’s an oil painting, a pencil drawing, an acrylic painting, graphite on canvas or a mural. Every time I pick up a paint brush, I grow. I feel as an artist, you never stop learning.

At this time in my life after raising two out of three children, I’ve decided to transition my career to the passion I had as a kid and pursue wildlife art full time. Wildlife art has never left me; it has always been calling me back.

What I hope my work portrays to the viewer is the dramatic, majestic and powerful impact I feel when I am inspired to paint a certain subject. I’ve spent numerous hours studying and in the field gathering research. I feel privileged to be so passionate and driven by wildlife. It is one of God’s greatest gifts.

Currently, I reside in San Diego County and live with my wife of 26 years and my 14 year old daughter. We have two grown sons who live close.

Check back often, as I will be adding new paintings often, shows and events in the days to come. Thank you for taking the time to look through this site. I’m available through the contact page with any questions or comments you have.
